UPDATE: 6/13/2023 - LD 899 was recalled from the Governor's desk for the Senate to be amended to clarify the authority delegated to pharmacy techs. The Senate passed Committee Amendment "A" (H-202) which stipulates that pharmacy technicians are only authorized to give vaccines, and not drugs.

UPDATE: 5/23/2023 - LD 899 was amended by the Committee on Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services with Amendment "A" (H-202), and it passed by the House. The amendment requires pharmacy technicians who will be administering vaccines to complete specified training requirements and have been issued a certification of administration by the Maine Board of Pharmacy. It also clarifies the timing of when drug or vaccine administration training requirements must be completed by pharmacists.

LD 899 was introduced by and referred to the Committee on Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services on 2/28/2023. 

LD 899 authorizes certified pharmacy technicians to administer vaccines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. The bill amends the drug or vaccine administration training requirements for pharmacists by removing the requirement that certain training requirements were completed in the previous 3 years. This bill codifies into law the provisions that were in effect during the Emergency Declaration. 

If passed by 2/3 majority in both houses, the bill would become effective when approved, under the emergency cited in the preamble.
