UPDATE: 7/18/2023 - HB 182 died. The House vote to override the governor's veto was 69 Ayes, 28 Nays, 8 Absent, less than the 2/3 requirement.
UPDATE: 6/29/2023 - HB 182 successfully passed the legislature but was vetoed by Governor John Bel Edwards on 6/29/2023. HB 182 would have prohibited requiring a COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of enrollment or attendance at a public or nonpublic school, college or licensed daycare as well as any mandates in the future addressing new variants of COVID-19. The Governor stated, in his Veto Message, that the residents of Louisiana do not face vaccine mandates to access government services or attend schools, however, some schools in New Orleans still have requirements for COVID-19 vaccination, and the Louisiana Department of Health can also grant approval to individual requests from schools to require more vaccines than what the state requires. There is also the possibility the Department of Health could mandate the COVID-19 vaccine in the future by way of an administrative rule change. Louisiana residents deserve the protections contained in HB 182.

UPDATE: 6/6/2023 - HB 182 passed the House with the Senate amendments on 6/6/2023 by a vote of 76 Yeas, 23 Nays.
UPDATE: 6/5/2023 - HB 182 passed the Senate on 6/5/2023 by a vote of 25 Yeas, 13 Nays, and ordered returned to the House. The Motion to reconsider was tabled.
UPDATE: 5/31/2023 - HB 182 was amended by the Senate Committee on Education on 6/1/2023. The 6/1/2023 amendments empower administrators, upon recommendation of the office of public health, to exclude from attendance any student or client without sufficient records of immunization until the appropriate disease incubation period has expired, or the person presents evidence of immunization. Some of the provisions of the bill do not apply to persons whose course registration is limited to correspondence, online instruction, or other meetings not held on the campus. The amendments do not change NVIC's position.
