HB 416 was introduced Representatives Deborah Silcox, Sharon Cooper, and four others on 2/15/2023.
The bill would authorize pharmacy technicians to administer FDA authorized and licensed vaccines on the adult immunization recommended by the ACIP of the CDC to individuals 18 years or older. COVID-19 vaccines shall be administered according to the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Pharmacy technicians must complete a minimum of two hours of training of immunization related continuing education. The supervising pharmacist shall ensure the patient and vaccine information is entered in the Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services. The bill would become effective upon its approval by the governor or upon its becoming law without such approval.
NVIC is opposed to this bill because it trivializes very real vaccine risks and serious reactions by allowing a pharmacy technician, perhaps with only a GED education, to administer possibly life-threatening vaccines to adults. According to the Georgia Board of Pharmacy, a pharmacy technician must be at least 17 years old and be currently enrolled in high school, have a high school diploma, or a GED.
