HB 609 was filed on 11/14/2022 and sponsored by State Representative Cody Vasut.
This bill amends section 148.003 of the Civil Practice and Remedies Code to protect a business owner or operator from liability for an injury or death to an individual caused by exposure to a pandemic disease if the business owner or operator does not require employees or contractors to be vaccinated for the pandemic disease. Some businesses felt pressure to mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for fear of liability if someone claimed they got sick contracting it from someone in the business. This bill removes that pressure. Vaccines don't work for everyone and some experience serious reactions and deaths from vaccines. It would not be fair for a business to be held liable for injury or death from a disease for which it did not require vaccination because vaccines do not prevent transmission or infection for everyone and many businesses know it is wrong to require employees to take a risk with a vaccine just to be able to keep their job.
