UPDATE: 7/19/2015 - Governor Kasich signed SB 121 on July 16, 2015. The new meningitis vaccine will go into effect on Oct. 15, 2015. Exemptions are allowed for reasons of conscience, including religious convictions. 

(3) Except as provided in division (B) of this section, during and after the school year beginning in 2016, no pupil who is the age or older than the age at which immunization against meningococcal disease is recommended by the state department of health shall be permitted to remain in a school subject to the state board of education's minimum standards for more than fourteen days unless the pupil presents written evidence satisfactory to the person in charge of admission that the pupil has been immunized by a department of health-approved method of immunization, or is in the process of being immunized, against meningococcal disease. 

B(4) A pupil who presents a written statement of the pupil's parent or guardian in which the parent or guardian declines to have the pupil immunized for reasons of conscience, including religious convictions, is not required to be immunized. - news article 

UPDATE: 6/30/2015 - The house accepted the committee report from the Health and Aging Committee on 5/27/2015 and the full house passed the bill on 6/25/2015. 

UPDATE: 4/27/2015 - SB 121 passed the senate and is now in the house. 

UPDATE: 4/11/2015 - SB 121 is scheduled for a hearing in the Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday, April 15th for opponent, proponent and interested party testimony.  It is possible that the committee will vote on the bill in this hearing.  The hearing starts at 8:45 AM in the North Hearing Room and SB 121 is currently scheduled to be the 3rd bill heard.

SB 121 was introduced on 3/9/2015 and is sponsored by Senator Cliff Hite.  This bill would add meningitis vaccine to the list of vaccines required for school in Ohio.  The department of health would determine at what age the new requirement would be applied to.  The new requirement would go into effect for the 2016 school year.  

Exemptions are still available for medical, religious or conscientious beliefs.  However bills can be amended though the legislative process. - Senator Hite legislative site
