HB 2708 was introduced in the House on 2/1/2024. This bill is sponsored by Representative Johnny Garrett.
SB 1974 was introduced in the Senate on 1/25/2024. This bill is sponsored by Senator Mark Pody.
HB 2708 and SB 1974 prohibit the manufacture, sale, delivery, or holding of meat products derived from livestock receiving mRNA vaccine or vaccine material unless the product is conspicuously labeled.
HB 2708 and SB 1974 amend Title 53, Chapter 7, regarding meat inspections and regulations, summarized as follows:
SECTION 1. adds the following as a new subdivision to Section 53-7-206:
Prohibits the manufacture, sale, delivery, holding, or offering for sale of any part of a meat product that was derived or prepared from livestock that received an mRNA vaccine or vaccine material unless the product labeling contains a conspicuous notification. The label type size must not be less than ten (10) point font and state that the product was derived or prepared from livestock that received an mRNA vaccine or vaccine material.
SECTION 2. adds the following as a new subdivision to Section 53-7-202:
Defines "mRNA vaccine or vaccine material" to mean "a genetic modification substance that delivers messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) into the cells to elicit an immune response through the creation of spike proteins, while causing genetic change in the recipient."
These bills would take effect immediately upon passage.
NVIC SUPPORTS HB 2708 and SB 1974 because they facilitate informed consent for consumers who do not want to consume food containing vaccine material. NVIC supports informed consent. Without reclassifying food containing vaccine material, the consumer cannot make an informed decision when choosing food for themselves and their family. An improvement on these bills would be to require labels on all products that contain any vaccine material, not just meat and poultry, and exacting penalties on companies that do not comply. Some plants are now being genetically engineered to deliver mRNA vaccines. There is insufficient evidence to support the safety of mRNA vaccines for human consumption.
