UPDATE: 3/29/2024 - AB 510 was VETOED by Governor Tony Evers on 3/29/2024; his veto statement can be read HERE. His statement includes the following, "This bill is neither aimed at supporting our parents, our kids, and our schools, nor improving student outcomes, nor fostering collaboration and communication to do what is best for our kids; this bill is yet another attempt to divide our schools and communities and inject political ideology in the very last place it belongs–in our classrooms and our schools. I urge politicians on both sides of the aisle to stop using our kids as political pawns. I am vetoing this bill in its entirety because I object to sowing division in our schools, which only hurts our kids and learning in our classrooms." We fail to see how parents being notified of each health care service offered at the child's school, along with the right to withhold consent from services has anything to do with divisiveness, political ideology, or using kids as political pawns.

AB 510 and SB 489 are parental rights bills that establishes a legal standard for state infringement on fundamental rights of parents and guardians, explicitly establishes a number of parental and guardian rights relating to a child's religion, medical care and records, and education, and creates a cause of action for the violation of these rights.
The bills state that parents have "the right to be notified of each health care service, including vaccinations or immunizations, offered at the child's school and the right to withhold consent or decline any specific service, unless otherwise specified by law or court order."
NVIC supports this provision of the bills, but takes no position on other areas covered in them.
