UPDATE: 2/19/2015

Dear Washington NVIC Advocacy Team Members,

What an amazing set of testimony from everyone who testified against HB 2009 - the bill to remove philosophical and personal belief exemptions.  Please go and listen to the testimony if you weren’t able to get to the capitol or listen online live. Share this video with friends and family in other states to help them defend their rights. We are definitely on the right side of this issue.  HB 2009 testimony begins at the 40:58 timestamp and the opposition testimony begins at 59:09.

HB 2009 did passed the House Health Care and Wellness Committee 2/18/2015 with a vote of 10 yes and 5 no.  To listen to the vote and comments, go to the 1:37:47 time stamp on the video of the hearing.http://www.tvw.org/index.php?option=com_tvwplayer&eventID=2015021176  Here is a recent article covering this. http://q13fox.com/2015/02/18/committee-passes-sends-full-house-bill-to-trim-washington-states-vaccine-exemptions

This is far from over and a vote like this indicates that 2/3 on the committee wanted the bill to receive more debate. Let’s give them so much more to have to debate! Don’t let them ignore the facts. The bill will now go to the full house for a vote.  It is imperative that you contact your Washington State Representative and Senator to ask them to VOTE NO on HB 2009. You can use the links on our alert on the NVIC Advocacy Portal to connect to your legislators. Please consider the talking points in our alert and definitely take the opportunity explain your personal reasons why the exemption is important to your family.

We also wanted to let you know that NVIC received a sincere apology to our organization and supporters from Health Care and Wellness Committee member Representative Norm Johnson for his “off-the-cuff remark”.  He classified his words as “inappropriate and a poor attempt at banter.”   He expressed an understanding why his words were “hurtful to people who care passionately about this issue.” Please read his apology letter here: http://nvicadvocacy.org/members/Portals/0/NVIC/NVICletterRepJohnson.pdf.

It is important for us all to keep in mind that legislators are human and they do make mistakes. Use this as an opportunity to reach out to Representative Johnson to sincerely thank him for his apology and share your story with him why he should oppose this bill during the full house vote.http://houserepublicans.wa.gov/norm-johnson/contact/

We apologize for the typo in our last alert for the email address for our Washington state directors.  Please correct your contacts for Janelle and Janine: WADirector@NVICAdvocacy.org.

We are so proud of all of you for your first class demonstration of your passion, intelligence, and commitment to your children and your rights to make informed vaccination choices for your family. The compassion and composure exhibited by those on our side of this fight stand out in stark contrast to arrogant and prejudicial behavior of those who profess to know what is better for your own children when they have never walked a day in your shoes or understand what your families have had to endure on this journey.  Keep it up. Share your stories. The country is watching and it is making a difference.

Sincerely,

Dawn Richardson, Director of Advocacy
