SB 1083 was assigned to the Education Sub Committee on Health, 1/20/2015.  The bill is sponsored by Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel.  The bill would add a meningococcal vaccine requirement for 6th and 12th grade students by adding the following to the list of existing required vaccines:

13. One dose of quadrivalent (A, C, Y, W-135) meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) before the child enters the sixth grade. Two age-appropriate doses of MCV4 before the child enters the twelfth grade unless the child's first dose was administered after his sixteenth birthday, then only one dose is required.

Current exemptions for religious beliefs would apply to the new requirement.  However, this bill should be closely watched to make no negative amendments or changes are proposed.

The provisions of this section shall not apply if:

The parent or guardian of the child objects thereto on the grounds that the administration of immunizing agents conflicts with his religious tenets or practices, unless an emergency or epidemic of disease has been declared by the Board;
